The first day of school.
The first day of school is a milestone every parent remembers.
One moment you’re juggling nap times and snack breaks, and the next you’re ironing a tiny uniform and labelling shoes that seem impossibly small. Then comes, ticking off the starting school checklist.

If your child is starting school for the first time, you’re probably feeling a whirlwind of emotions – pride, excitement, maybe even a little anxiety. And that’s completely normal. This isn’t just a big day for your child – it’s a big day for you too.

Connect with other parents
If you already know other parents whose children are starting school, reach out. Arrange a quick chat, a walk, or even a message exchange. Sharing thoughts (and worries) can help lighten the load and remind you that you’re all figuring it out together.

The checklist is your friend
Most schools provide a first day of school checklist and how to prepare – uniforms, PE kits, lunch boxes, water bottles, stationery. Go through it carefully. If anything’s unclear, don’t be shy to follow up with the school. A quick phone call or email now can save you a last-minute scramble later.

Your feelings matter – and so do theirs
It’s perfectly fine to feel anxious, but remember your child will often mirror your emotions. Show them the excitement – talk about new friends, fun activities, and all the wonderful things they’ll get to try. Your enthusiasm can help ease any first day of school anxiety your child may be feeling.

At the school gate…
There will be tears for some – parents and children alike. For others, it’ll be a quick hug and a wave as your child heads off, psyched to start their day. Whichever side you find yourself on, know that both are normal. Take a deep breath, soak in the moment, and remember; time flies quicker than you think.

A few practical tips to make the first day smoother:

  • Lay everything out the night before – clothes, shoes, packed lunch, school bag.
  • Plan an early bedtime to give them (and you!) a good night’s sleep.
  • Keep the morning calm – allow extra time so you’re not rushing.
  • Take a photo to remember the day (but don’t linger too long at drop-off).

This is the start of a whole new adventure – for your child and for you. There will be wobbles along the way, but there will also be moments of joy, pride, and growth that make it all worthwhile.

You’ve got this. And so do they. Enjoy the experience.
